Game Day Weather

Weather can change quickly. Learn how we handle cancellations, unsafe playing conditions, severe weather, and game rescheduling.

Weather Decision Process

Use this page to understand what happens when weather may impact your game, what captains should do, and when we will communicate cancellations.

SSC Game Day Weather Procedure Flowchart

Decision Deadline

If games are cancelled by the municipality, facility, or SSC, teams will be notified by text and/or email by 3:00 PM, or as soon as possible.

If You Don’t Hear From Us

If you do not receive a cancellation notice by 3:00 PM, games are considered ON. Captains may still communicate with each other if conditions become unsafe.

Game Day Weather Scenarios

Here’s how to handle the most common weather situations.

Scenario 1: Municipality or Facility Cancels

If the city, municipality, or facility closes fields, courts, or gyms due to weather, SSC will cancel all games and attempt to reschedule them at a later date.

Please do not go to the game in an attempt to play. If the city or facility cancels, no game will be played regardless of any agreement between teams.

  • Teams will be notified by text and/or email by 3:00 PM whenever possible.
  • SSC will post a website message or banner by 3:00 PM if leagues are cancelled.
  • Please avoid contacting SSC about cancellations before 3:00 PM.
Scenario 2: Facilities Are Open + SSC Is Monitoring

If facilities remain open, SSC will monitor the situation throughout the day. Keep an eye on your text and email for updates.

If you do not hear from SSC by 3:00 PM, games are ON. Captains may then speak with each other to decide whether both teams intend to play.

Both teams may agree not to play and record the game as a draw. A team may also choose to forfeit if they do not wish to play due to the weather.

Scenario 3: Games Are ON But Conditions Are Unsafe On-Site

If your game is ON but the field, court, or gym is unsafe when you arrive, teams have every right not to play.

Examples of unsafe playing conditions include:

  • Standing water that cannot be played around
  • Dangerously uneven ground
  • Obstructions in the playing area

Captains should speak on-site, agree that the game should not be played, notify SSC, and submit the Reschedule Request Form.

Scenario 4: Games Are ON But Road Conditions Are Poor

If your game is ON but road conditions are unsafe or uncomfortable for travel, captains may contact each other using the Captain Contacts feature.

If both captains agree not to play, they may record the game as a tie. If one team attends and the other does not, it is an automatic win for the present team.

If the facility does not close, games remain ON and will not be rescheduled simply because teams choose not to attend.

Severe Weather Watch

Weather may change between the 3:00 PM decision and your game time.

Stopping Play

If severe weather occurs after players have arrived, games should be stopped immediately. Play should be stopped no more than twice in one game.

If the severe weather passes, continue play from where the game left off.

If Weather Does Not Pass

Captains should check sport rules to determine whether the game counts and how to report the score. Teams may agree to record the game as a tie or complete a Reschedule Request Form.

Air Quality

SSC will call all outdoor games OFF if the Air Quality Health Index rating is 10 or above.

If the rating changes during the evening, captains may need to make the call at the game.

Heat Warning

During periods of extreme heat, SSC will monitor conditions throughout the day and evening.

Players should stay hydrated, take breaks, and prioritize safety.

Thunderstorms

If there is thunder or lightning at game time, take cover away from open spaces.

Follow the 30/30 rule: if thunder follows lightning within 30 seconds, wait at least 30 minutes before resuming play.

Tornado Watch / Warning

During a tornado watch, games remain ON while SSC monitors the situation.

During a tornado warning, all SSC games will be called OFF.

Snow Storm

During snowstorms, SSC monitors the situation throughout the day.

If the facility closes, teams will be notified by text and/or email. If the facility remains open, games remain ON unless SSC says otherwise.

Game Rescheduling Policy

Rescheduled games are not guaranteed, but SSC will make reasonable efforts when possible.

Every reasonable effort will be made to reschedule games missed during the regular season due to facility closure, unsafe playing conditions, or inclement weather stoppages.

If your team does not show up when the game is ON, the game will not be rescheduled.

Option A

SSC may extend the season by one week and reschedule the game at the end of the season on the same night you signed up to play.

Option B

If the season cannot be extended, SSC may look to reschedule the game as a double-header later in the season.

Option C

If other options are not available, the rescheduled game may take place on a different night of the week. This date is decided by SSC.

Playoff Rescheduling

If a playoff game is missed due to weather and cannot be rescheduled, final matchups or final placement may be determined based on the standings page.

Need To Request A Reschedule?

The Reschedule Request Form should only be submitted if SSC did not cancel games and the field, court, or facility was unplayable.
